Taking a stroll on a black, sandy beach in Iceland in 2006, Icelandic jewelry designer Johanna Methusalemsdottir came across the white bones of an Arctic Tern, lying in the sand. Intrigued by the shapes of the bones, Johanna took them home to play with. The result is her successful Kria collection, a set of mystical, slightly macabre line of jewelry. The collection consists of bronze, black oxidized silver and 14 carat gold amulets cast from the jawbone of fish and birds vertebrae etc. Cod bones are the main inspiration for Kria´s upcoming collection, which will be available in selected stores in New York, Iceland and Norway.

This bright and colorful apartment is the home of Stine A Johansen´s and her family in Copenhagen. Most of the colorful paintings are Stine´s own work. The apartment is beautifully furnished with design classics such as the Tolix and Eames chairs, new design such as the round dining room table, designed by Anders Folke Andersen and flea market finds.

There isn´t much information to be found on this beautiful apartment which I found on Sköna Hem´s website, but I think it´s the home of the stylist/photographer who shot these images, Daniella Witte. I know some might feel there´s been enough already of homes decorated in white, black, gray and wood on blogs in general, but this is my favorite palette and similar to what you will find in my home, so there;)

Although I feel safest with terra firma underneath my feet, I have to admit to a huge weakness for sailboats. One thing on my To-do-before-I-die-list is to take a vacation sailing, not on your ordinary cruise liners but preferably on an old-fashioned sailboat (sleek wooden decks would be a definite plus). It wouldn´t hurt if my float would be as aesthetically perfect as this yacht, designed by Luca Brenta with interiors designed by none other than John Pawson. The Italian artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) is best known for his mastery in playing with the dramatic effects of light in his paintings. As one art historian famously said, Caravaggio put the "oscuro" in the chiaroscuro (the gradiation of light and shade in a painting as I learned in Art History class way back). IThe Danish designer Cecilia Manz, in 2005, designed and named one of her best-known designs, the Caravaggio light, after the Italian painter. The clean, modern lines of the lamp are on the other hand, inspired by modern industrial-style trends. The light is producted by Lightyears.

The Tablo table is designed by Nicholai Wiig Hansen for Normann Copenhagen. The inspiration for the table comes from the classic and decorative Morocco tea tables which Nicholai has updated into this streamlined, minimalistic version that is Tablo. More on Tablo here.

This is the home of Eva and Gentry Dayton in Brooklyn. I first saw these images in Rum magazine few months ago and fell in love with it (love, love LOVE the vintage Harley Davidson in the living room). Eva runs the store Eva Gentry in Brooklyn, stocking clothes and accessories from the likes of Helmut Lang, Maison Martin Margiela and Thakoon. Together Eva and Gentry work on designing interiors, Helmut Lang´s New York showroom being one of their recent projects.

Artist and illustrator Mats Gustafson is the owner of this stunning apartment in Stockholm´s Södermalm area.

The vases on top of the tiled fireplace are the work of Modernist ceramists Axel Salto and Berndt Friberg among others.

In the foyer, a light by Isamu Noguchi hangs above 19th-century furnitures.

The painting on the wall above the bench is the work of Mats´s great-uncle, Birger Ljungquist.

Swedish glassworks line the studio window which has a fantastic view over Stockholm´s harbour.

There are many details in this home that I love: the perfect combination of new designs, vintage auction finds and industrial style, the raw brick wall in the living room and the round industrial lights from Can Can which hang above the big kitchen/dining room table (not to mention the Tolix chairs and the industrial style "bar" from Moêll & Moêll!). More on this home, here.

The reindeer on the wall is the work of Lotta Rubom. The small cabinet was found at an auction.

The bed is from Ikea, the floor lamp from Olsson & Jensen.

Christmas at Nordal

I´m sorry for the lack of posts lately, as I´ve said before, life sometimes gets in the way of me attending properly to Koolandkreativ. I´ll be posting few Christmas images later today and in the next few days leading up to Christmas, but right now the weather here in the south of Iceland is so breathtakingly beautiful that it´s impossible not to resist going out. There is fresh snow everywhere, the sun is shining and the wind is calm. The daylight is absolutely beautiful when the weather conditions are like this, especially in the twilight hours. I´m off for a bit of a brisk walk before I get back to blogging but in the meantime I hope you enjoy these images from the Danish design company Nordal.

One of the group´s many successful projects, is this loft apartment in Lodz, Poland. The details that particularly appeal to me in this apartment, are the white, brick walls with the beautifully arched windows, the herringbone hardwood floors and how these elements mix effortlessly with the elegant minimalism, found in the interiors and choice of furnitures.

Moroccan wedding blankets

Traditional handmade Moroccan wedding blankets, Handiras, are given to Moroccan brides on their wedding day. It´s role is both ceremonial as well as practical; the rug is a gift of good luck and blessings for the bride but also used to wrap around her on her way to her new home. The rugs are traditional Berber rugs, usually made with sheep´s wool and decorated with sequins. I think Handiras are so beautiful, draped over beds, hung up on walls or used as floor mats.

Warm drinks for cold nights

I very rarely put my own work on my blog but thought I might share these with you, they seem to fit so well with the mood of the season. I did these few years ago for Gestgjafinn, a magazine on food and wine here in Iceland. Photographer was Kristinn Magnusson and it was a very dear friend of mine, the domestic goddess Sirry, who did the tasty recipes for this feature. All the drinks were warm, exotic and oh so perfect for those dark autumn/winter nights when you want nothing more than to cuddle up on the sofa and make yourself as comfortable as possible.

Mayan Chocolate

1 red chili

4 dl water

1 l milk

1 vanilla

1 cinnamon stick

200 grams dark chocolate, chopped

2 tablespoons sugar or honey

2 dl whipped cream

(1 dl equals 100 milliliters, approx. 7 tablespoons)

Cut the chili in two and remove the seeds.

Put in a saucepan with the water and boil for approx. 5 min or until half of the water has evaporated.

Sieve and put aside.

Put the milk in the saucepan, remove the pods from the vanilla and add to the milk along with the vanilla and cinnamon stick and bring to boil.

Add chocolate and sugar or honey and melt together.

Take vanilla and cinnamon stick out of the saucepan.

Add the chili water to the saucepan according to taste, you might not want to use it all.

Pour into cups and add a dash of whipped cream on top.

Enjoy:)

Although my favorite color palette tends to lean more towards neutral colors with perhaps few dashes of brighter colors in between (that´s how I decorate my personal space), I absolutely love lots of bright and cheerful colors, especially in children´s rooms.

Through La Maison d´Anna G. I came across Mokkasin, a webshop for children. Lots of lovely things there. I personally would go nuts there, if I had any children to lavish with toys;)

I love autumn

I love autumn, to me its the most romantic season of all. I adore the warm color palette found on leaves, trees and moss, the stillness in the air, the daylight, the change to fill the house with candles that create a romantic and relaxing ambiance. Autumn is also the time of year when you head into the woods for some mushroom-picking, a great way to spend the afternoon with friends and family, weather permitting. I´ve been meaning to post an entry on ceramist Thora Finnsdottir Söe for ages, ever since I first saw examples of her work in a Danish magazine ages ago. Thora is Icelandic but studied at the Danish Design School in Copenhagen were she currently lives and works on her art. Thora´s handmade ceramic pieces have strong roots in the design traditions of Scandinavia, as well as being inspired by her home country Iceland. Everyday colors and forms inspire Thora who through experimentations, adds her own personal touch to these otherwise everyday items, giving them a new expression.

Events producer, art director and designer Alexandre de Betak, certainly has a home that´s one of a kind. The house, heavily inspired by 70´s organic architecture, is located in a coastal area of Majorca and is built with materials made by local artisans but with every aspect of the house designed by Alexandre himself. In December last year, I came across this calender that I reaaaally liked. Have to admit, I didn´t give myself time to dig a bit further into the designer behind it but then, last month, a friend pointed out this website to me, saying this would definitely be something for me. Again, I didn´t have time to look further into it but saw that it looked familiar somehow, (I do sound quite busy, don´t I ?), and bookmarked it right away, so I could have a better look a bit later. When I did, I of course, absolutely loved it (my friend knows my tastes quite well). Apparently Fabien and I like each other, because when I was leisurely browsing through the Interior category, I came across a very nice entry about Koolandkreativ. Merci beaucoup, Fabien;)
And yes, I absolutely ADORE (spoken with a French accent) everything I see coming from this very talented graphic designer, Fabien Barral. Here are some examples of his incredibly talents.

Tinna Gunnarsdottir product designer

The often dramatic landscape of Iceland, unique nature, Icelandic folklore, memories from childhood and tales of elves and fairies are some of product designer Tinna Gunnarsdottir´s main source of inspiration. Here are few examples of her beautiful work.

Starkadur, an aluminium wall hook, takes its form from a whale tooth.

Fluga, a table/stool, made of plywood and mirror steel.

The Tuesday Project is the name for Tinna´s collaboration with two other Icelandic designers, Sigridur Sigurjonsdottir and Gudrun Lilja Gunnlaugsdottir. Their aim is to make products that respect the Icelandic nature and our cultural heritage. The small, delicate silver/gold coated branch above and the small stool in Icelandic birch and cast metal below, are two examples of that collaboration.

The Storage stool serie is inspired by visit´s to Tinna´s grandmother who lived in a small village on the south coast of Iceland. In her kitchen were two small stools, which, like these made by Tinna, had the secondary function of storage space.

Samurai, is a serie of rubber table cloth in the form of various bugs, the forms chosen for their beautiful silhouettes.

The Garden Gnome, made from Icelandic lava, can either be a mobile home for the fairies, a garden protector or a simple garden gnome.

A flat in Copenhagen

Pia Möller is the lucky owner of this cool apartment, situated centrally in Copenhagen. What I love about it is how open and spacious it looks and how the pristine white of the walls and floors and most of the furnitures contrasts with the black color dominating Pia´s wardrobe as well as many of the furnitures and items in the apartment. The mix of classic cornices and details typical for a house from that period, and the rock chick elements that Pia´s personal style brings to the apartment, is also a drool factor;)

The painting is Pia´s work. I love the raw shelf unit unit where Pia keeps the stereo, books and the Kubus 4 candleholder, designed by Peter Karpf in 1956.

The dining room is the heart of the apartment. The table is from Norman Foster and the chairs from Ray and Charles Eames. The painting on the wall was done by Pia herself.

The bedroom is on the top floor with rooftop windows. Adjoining the bedroom is the bathroom with it´s raw brick wall, which gives a nice contrast to the bathroom units.

A touch of the industrial style that Pia loves, is brought into the kitchen with the two small stools. The black bowl in the window is designed by John Pawson for When objects work. The lamp is from Artemide.

Tara Ballantyne is one of those talented people I´ve been fortunate enough to get to know through my work as a stylist/journalist. Tara, who originally comes from Canada, now lives and works in Norway and in my opinion, she is absolutely one of the best stylists working in Scandinavia today. Here are some samples of her recent work but you can see much more from Tara through her blog, With Style and Substance.

Tara also makes the most gorgeous necklaces which I´m definitely treating myself with one day for sure:)
